The story of Lewisville begins in the 1840s when the area was first known as Holford’s Prairie. In 1844, the families of John and Augustus King became the first settlers to establish roots in what would become southeastern Denton County. These pioneering families received land grants from the Republic of Texas as part of an ambitious effort to settle North Texas, with each family receiving 640 acres of fertile prairie land.
The settlement transformed dramatically in 1853 when Basdeal W. Lewis purchased the Holford properties and established the town that would bear his name. That same year, the Lewisville post office opened, marking the community’s official recognition. By 1862, local entrepreneurs Rawlins, Kealy, and Herod built a gristmill that became the economic anchor of the growing settlement. Lewisville formally incorporated on January 15, 1925, when residents voted 109 to 92 to establish their municipality.
